Is it still possible to make money with an affiliate?

I’m sure you’ve heard of affiliate marketing – you basically recommend products and services online and earn a commission from every sale that is made through your affiliate link.

Affiliate marketing is very popular because it has many advantages over so many other online business models.

1. The three main benefits of affiliate marketing

  • You don’t have to create products or buy inventory.
  • Once you have made a sale, you are done – the seller provides after-sales support to the customer.
  • You can offer a wide choice of products in your niche by offering products from many different merchants.

These three reasons are exactly why making money with affiliates is still possible and why affiliate marketing still works and is a viable business to enter, whether you are a newbie or an experienced marketer.

In fact, it is perfect for those who want to earn online from home to round up with a few thousand euros a month.

2. So, how much money can you make with affiliate marketing?

Well, it all depends on you. There are literally thousands of small merchants paying thousands of dollars a month to affiliates through affiliate networks or through affiliate programs they run in-house.

There are countless affiliate marketers and bloggers earning a full-time income from home, and there is plenty of room for others. In my humble opinion, affiliate marketing as an online business is still viable and will be for many years to come.

3. How do you get into affiliate marketing?

The first step is planning your affiliate business, and that involves choosing a market to work in. This is absolutely the most crucial step. Do it well, and there will be no limits. Fail here, and you will waste countless hours with no profit.

To begin with, you need to know how to focus on one niche and only one. It takes work to set up a new website or blog, add content and generate traffic; therefore, working on only one topic is the best strategy, at least until you have the project that makes money.

Then you can consider expanding it or entering another niche altogether. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • You will need an argument
  • a constant stream of useful content
  • a website or blog
  • and a list-building strategy

Let’s talk about each of these steps.

3.1 Choose your affiliate niche topic

Start by choosing a niche topic that fits well with at least one of these two criteria:

  • Markets with lots of products/services that people will buy pretty much forever. These are called “evergreen” markets and ensure the long-term profitability of your affiliate business. For example, hobbies and pastimes such as sports, gardening, lifestyle.
  • Markets with many desperate and/or impulsive buyers. These are your most personal products that help with things like ailments, looks, relationships, etc. (Not my cup of tea, but many affiliates do well in this “need immediate help” space).

It is also useful if you enter a niche that you either know something or are at least interested in. For example, if you don’t like cooking outside, I wouldn’t recommend starting a BBQ blog. You won’t really enjoy it, and it will show up in your content.

Make sure there are good products in the niche you choose – or information products on the subject and/or products on Amazon.

3.2 Write or have your niche content written

Once you’ve selected a niche to work in, you simply need to focus on helping people in that niche. That’s right, and your main focus should be on helping people, not selling stuff, especially in the beginning. As you help more and more people, you will build a following. More and more people will trust your advice.

Then, when you recommend a product or service, you will have the opportunity to generate commissions!

So how do you help people? With relevant, useful, and insightful content. Essays, articles, tips, videos, etc.

If you find writing hard work, you can simply entrust your writing to professional writers. I entered niches that interested me but knew little about. I simply searched the web to find out what advice people want, then hired writers on Text Broker, Fiverr, or Mela Write to do research and write original articles for me.

The items cost me around 30 euros each, but it’s worth it considering I save around two hours each time!

3.3 Build your blog or website

This is easier than ever today, thanks to WordPress. Setting up a site with the self-hosted version of WordPress can be done in a day or two if you are computer literate. And there are a ton of themes available for affiliate marketers nowadays.

You can use one of the many free themes you find on WordPress or buy a premium theme if you want to save time and maximize revenue. Once you have the theme installed on your WordPress site, start filling your site with useful content that your niche is looking for.

Remember to focus on helping people! If you don’t feel up to it, build a blog on your own.

3.4 Build an Email Opt-in List

Once you have a blog up and running, you should focus your efforts on growing a list of potential customers. Yes, even with affiliate marketing, you need to grow an internal email list if you want to increase your chances of earning with affiliates.

This is how you will be able to generate commissions in the long run by sending emails to your contacts in the list. You see, when people come to your site or blog, they might not buy the first time they are there. But if you can get them on your list, you’ll have a better chance of creating a professional relationship with them.

For this, you will need a tool called an autoresponder. It is software that manages the subscriptions for you, as well as your follow-up emails and “broadcast” emails. There are many email marketing and newsletter platforms, and all of them have an integrated autoresponder service. Choosing the right email marketing software for your needs depends on many factors.

Once you have an autoresponder, you can easily add opt-in forms to your site or blog. Here, too, there is no shortage of professional solutions such as Optinmonster or Thriveleads.

It’s also helpful to give away something of value for free – a training course or a pack of downloadable goodies that your site visitors can’t resist. In jargon, it’s called a Lead Magnet.

4. Final considerations

Earning with affiliations is possible, and affiliate marketing will be one of the most interesting online businesses for beginners and not only.

Affiliate marketing is simply too profitable for merchants to give up. And that means there will be affiliates who will earn money practically forever. Once you master the strategy explained in this article, you can put it into action over and over again in multiple niches if you want.
